  4. In 1945, few would have imagined that the company that built the
  5. Bf 109 and the one that made the P-51 would ever join forces. 
  6. Yet descendants of those firms, Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm (MBB)
  7. and the Rockwell International Corporation, have joined forces to
  8. develop the radical X-31.  It is the first United States "X"
  9. program conducted on an international basis.

  11. In appearance, the X-31 is much like the latest generation of
  12. European fighters, with clipped double-delta wings and canard
  13. surfaces.  Like the Grumman X-29, the X-31A made substantial use
  14. of existing components to lower the research costs.  The engine,
  15. a General Electric F404, as well as the instrument panel, canopy
  16. and ejection seat came from the F/A-18.  The landing gear, fuel
  17. pump, and rudder pedals are taken from the F-16.  In the future,
  18. this NATO cooperative program hopes to develop a series of
  19. fighter planes with enhanced maneuverability.
